How can shrimps live inside a sealed container? First of all, food. Shrimps eat algae. Algae don't disappear because the amount that grows is the same as that is eaten. Now, how do algae keep growing? Algae grow from the nutrient of shrimp feces. Next, air. The carbon dioxide(CO2) is created from shrimps, and reduced by algae, and those amounts are balanced. You can say the same with the oxygen. The water doesn't get dirty, since microorganisms decompose waste. Everything is symphonious, and is circulating. The energy resource is the light. If shrimps eat too much, algae decrease, and shrimps would die because of not enough oxygen. If shrimps die, algae increase, and CO2 decrease, and then algae die. If light is not enough, carbon dioxide assimilation effect is insufficient, and shrimps die due to lack of oxygen. With harmony of shrimps, algae, microorganisms, and light, the ecosystem works out. If one goes wrong, the whole ecosystem breakup. What a greatness of nature! I was very much impressed and then noticed the fact. The fact that this is exactly same as Earth! The fact that even if one of the forest, atmosphere, sea goes wrong, the whole Earth dies out. The fact that we, human beings, are starting to break the balance. The fact that we are on the turning point, whether we can avoid the destruction of the Earth or not. **This Ecosphere was sold in Smithsonian Institution in Washington. We bought it in 2002 and it's still in our office, alive. Ecosphere Associates Inc. http://www.eco-sphere.com/home.htm
